Causes of Crooked Teeth
- Misaligned jaw (Malocclusion) is responsible as the upper and lower teeth don’t meet comfortably. They cause two common types of jaw misalignment. Overbite – where the upper teeth protrude, underbite – where the lower teeth sit in front of the upper teeth. Jaw abnormality may cause jaw pain, Tmj ( Temporomandibular joint) dysfunction.
- Poor myofunctional habits in kids. It refers to the repetitive behaviors in kids like thumb sucking, pacifier or bottle use, tongue thrusting, mouth breathing etc. They affect the muscles or functions of the mouth or face.
- Small Jaw Size – The modern diet of soft, processed food has changed the jaw size, making it smaller. It may be a reason for crowded, crooked and misaligned teeth.
- Genetics and heredity – If one or both of your parents had crowded or crooked teeth, it’s possible that you will, too. You may also inherit an overbite or underbite from your parents.
- Facial injury – Severe hit to the face or mouth may knock teeth out of place, result in one or more crooked teeth.

People are self-conscious while smiling due to crooked teeth. They may also suffer from other mouth and gum problems:

With crooked teeth it is difficult to chew foods properly. So this may hamper your digestion, results in stomach problem. - Since crooked teeth are misaligned, upper jaw and lower jaw don’t fit well. As a result excess wear and tear of teeth, gums and jaw muscles occur while speaking or chewing food. Cracked teeth, jaw strain, temporomandibular joint disorder, and also chronic headache results.
- Teeth play a major role to articulate sound which helps us to speak. So crooked teeth may cause problems with speech.

Treatment
Orthodontic treatment is not a quick fix for crooked teeth, and treatment can take months or even years but the benefits include long term results and less damage to your teeth. Providing you wear your retainers, your teeth will remain straight and you won’t find yourself needing to fund more treatment in the future.
Dentists refer orthodontic treatment for children with crooked teeth. Since their mouth and jaws are still growing this is the best treatment to overcome crooked teeth. Teeth and jaws aren’t stuck in one position, so with constant pressure they slowly change alignment.
For adults having severe crooked teeth first of all your orthodontist will use palatal expander to widen the upper jaw, then a lingual bar, if needed to open out the lower jaw. Finally braces are used, with regular adjustments they gradually correct the position of the teeth. When braces are removed, retainers are used in place to maintain the teeth in their new positions.
Should you straighten Crooked Teeth?
Crooked, misaligned teeth are very common. Many children and adults have them. Teeth that aren’t perfectly aligned are unique to you and can add personality and charm to your smile. However, if you’re unhappy with the way your teeth look, or if they’re causing health or speech issues, you can have them realigned.
