Bad breath, medically known as halitosis is a common condition often caused by a buildup of bacteria in the mouth because of gum disease, food, or plaque. Dry mouth is also responsible for halitosis. It is an unpleasant condition that’s cause for embarrassment.

What are Signs & Symptoms of Bad Breath?

Many individuals with bad breath may be unaware they have it, or their signs and symptoms may only be temporary. The odor often depends upon the source or underlying cause of the bad breath.

Some common symptoms of bad breath include:

  • bad breath smell,
  • bad taste in the mouth, sour taste, or taste changes,
  • dry mouth,
  • a coating on the tongue.

What Causes Bad Breath?

The vast majority of bad breath cases – nearly 90 percent – are caused by periodontal disease, or gum disease. We are uniquely capable of providing bad breath and halitosis treatment because we specialize in the treatment of gum disease.

Other causes of bad breath include:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Dry mouth
  • Ill-fitting dental crowns, bridges and dental restorations
  • Cracked, leaking or poorly designed dental fillings
  • Poorly cleaned dentures
  • Dietary habits, including foods, drinks and smoking

How do health care professionals diagnose halitosis?

You have halitosis if you have bad breath, and a doctor is not needed to diagnose the condition. However, if your bad breath is chronic, if it does not go away with proper oral hygiene, or you have other symptoms, you will need to see a doctor or dentist to diagnose the underlying cause.

A doctor or dentist will examine your mouth to look for signs of gum disease, dry mouth, or infections that may be the cause of your bad breath.

What Can I Do to Prevent Bad Breath?

To reduce or prevent bad breath:

  • Brush your teeth after you eat.
  • Floss at least once a day.
  • Brush your tongue.
  • Clean dentures or dental appliances.
  • Avoid dry mouth.
  • Adjust your diet.
  • Regularly get a new toothbrush
  • Schedule regular dental checkups.

Treatment of Bad Breath

We employ simple, yet tried-and-true bad breath and halitosis treatments to great effect at our Bhubaneswar cosmetic dentistry practice.

In most cases, bad breath is caused by periodontal disease. This is easily treated via a range of non-surgical, laser, and if necessary, surgical treatments.
Scaling and Root Planing – In this non-surgical treatment, the root surfaces are subjected to a thorough and comprehensive cleaning. Bacteria and plaque buildup are removed from beneath the gum line to smooth the tooth root and eliminate toxins.

Bad Breath in Children

Most children have ‘bad breath’ when they wake up. This usually goes away after your child has something to eat and drink and cleans her teeth. … Other causes of bad breath in children and teenagers include mouth or throat infections, a blocked nose, sinusitis, gum disease (gingivitis), tooth decay or abscesses.
