Depending on the severity of your gapped teeth, there are several treatments available for patients looking to close the gap. Accordingly the cost also varies depending upon the treatment and person.

If gap between your teeth is small then the easiest, quickest, and most economical way to fix is Dental bonding and Porcelain veneers.

Whereas for more severe cases of diastema you may need orthodontics treatment. But don’t worry, if you’re against having metal brackets on your teeth, there are other options like invisible aligners which are far less noticeable and can even be removed. The downside, of course, is that orthodontic treatment will take longer than dental bonding or veneers.

WHY DO YOU HAVE TEETH GAPS?

If we assume that you don’t have any teeth missing, you can have gaps for different reasons:

  • Some or all of your teeth are smaller than average.
  • Your jaw is larger than average, leading to spacing between them.
  • Both of the above

GAP CONDITIONS AND SOLUTIONS

  • There is a gap between your side teeth and front teeth only. In this situation the best solution is to restore them to their proper size, which will re-balance the proportions of your smile. This is best done using cosmetic bonding (a non-invasive procedure) and can be done in as little as 30 minutes by a dentist.
  • There is a gap around your canines on one side. If the adult canine is in too complex a place to bring into position, the best solution is often the same as above – to bond/restore the baby tooth to make it look bigger.
  • There is a gap between the front teeth. This is very common and can be caused for many reasons. If the front two teeth are very small, then the solution can be to bond them to improve their size then move them together. There could also be a gap due to a small piece of gum/flesh between the teeth called a frenum – this stops the teeth moving together and sometimes needs to be removed.
  • There are gaps between all your teeth. This would be because your teeth are too small in relation to your jaw. It would often be a good idea to use aligners, or other types of braces, to move the teeth closer together but in some situations there are bigger gaps between your top teeth compared to the bottom. This means that some spaces will need to be left at the top or towards the back, or closed with cosmetic bonding.

TEETH BONDING FOR CLOSING GAPS

Bonding can be used to close gaps between the teeth in some people, but keep in mind it is not a substitute for orthodontic treatment. A number of patients with diastemas cannot be treated with bonding alone. If you have other dental problems in addition to your gap – such as crooked or crowded teeth or a misaligned bite – your dentist will recommend for orthodontic treatment. It is a way of straightening or moving teeth, to improve the appearance of the teeth and how they work.

If your only dental problem is a small gap between your two front teeth, orthodontic treatment may not be necessary and your dentist can consider closing the gap with this common bonding procedure. Consult your dentist to find if you’re a good candidate after examining your mouth.
